LCT Show Assures Limousine Operators Available Funding on Show Floor

Limousine Industry Going Green

Canadian taxi industry is going green due to smaller fuel efficient cars replacing the larger sedans.

And limo industry is to follow too.

Jean Abi Aad has been driving cab in Calgary, Canada for eight years. Six months ago, he made the switch to a hybrid car and he says his passengers love it. "They are very pleased. Jean Abi Aad says his new hybrid allows him to travel up to 1,200 km on a 45L tank.

The owner of Mayfair Taxi, a local company that has made the hybrid switch, says by 2015 all the company's fleet will be made up of hybrids.

Next week, cab company owners in Calgary will be presenting a report to the Taxi Limousine Action Committee about the hybrid and how it performs in the city.

2 Killed in Crash With Limousine

Roswell police have identified two Marietta men killed in a weekend crash on Georgia 92.

Roswell Police Lt. James McGee said in a statement Monday that Julio Cesar Cate, age unknown, and 24-year-old Jairo Efrain Curruchich were pronounced dead at the scene of Sunday morning's accident.

Authorities said four people were riding in the vehicle when it collided with a limousine at about 2:30 a.m., east of Mansell Road.

Two other passengers were injured. Their names were not available.

Investigators said the car was traveling with its lights off and alcohol may have been a factor.

Limo Hid Over $800,000 in Cash

The Hummer limousine seized from the drug-dealing Black Mafia Family almost four years ago had been sold at auction, then sold three times more. It had been carrying teenagers to proms and brides and grooms to weddings.

But as federal officials prepared for a June trial, they “debriefed” other BMF members and learned agents missed something when they searched the Hummer.

In August, agents tracked down the car, looked underneath the seats and found $875,000 in cash and seven brand new semi-automatic weapons, believed to be proceeds from BMF cocaine transactions.

The four “innocent owners,” according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert McBurney, knew nothing.

Information about the money and guns found in two “traps” was discussed this week as members of the BMF charged in Atlanta were sentenced.

Federal agents seized the black 2003 Hummer H2 stretch limousine in November 2004 when they raided one of BMF’s stash houses, “Space Mountain” on Paran Place in an upper-class northwest Atlanta neighborhood.

BMF members had cleaned out and fled the house, but they left the Hummer because they did not have keys to a car blocking the limousine.

McBurney said agents searched the limo and nothing found. The limo changed hands several times, finally ending up with Atlanta’s Comfort Limousine.

The Hummer was one of the extravagances BMF enjoyed with profits from its violent drug organization.

Limousines Serving Alcohol Illegally Getting Caught

Officers are concerned at a rise in the number of the long vehicles which are serving alcohol illegally to parties.

Sergeant Scott Lloyd warned any limousine drivers caught supplying their passengers with alcohol will be reported to the authorities.

Under the new Licensing Act, coach and limousine operators who charge for hire of vehicles are committing an offence if they supply alcohol, even as part of the overall hire charge.

Sgt Lloyd said: 'We are finding these limousines, most of them coming from outside Cardiff, are serving alcohol to passengers during the fare but they don't have the correct licence.

'We will be passing the details of the limousines we stopped onto the relevant local licensing officers and they will visit the owners.'

Police stopped 24 taxis, minibuses and limousines in total during the four- hour operation in Cardiff city centre on Friday night.

The checks were carried out after concerns about how certain drivers were operating.

Police targeted all the main routes in and around the city centre between 7pm and 11pm on September 15, including North Road and Mermaid Quay.

After being flagged down, the taxis, minibuses and limos were taken to the lay-by outside Cardiff Crown Court for further examination by Government and council inspectors.

Six vehicles were found to be in a potentially dangerous condition with bald tyres, a defective steering rack, broken lights and defective brakes.

Of these six, two were taken off the road immediately and four were issued with suspended notices.

One driver did not have a licence and another driver will have his licence reviewed because of problems with his vehicle.

Police Cracking Down on Illegal Limo Services

The Oklahoma City Police Department is getting tough on unlicensed limousine services operating in Oklahoma City. On Tuesday, officers addressed the situation head-on.

An investigator posing as a fare contacted two limousine services that advertise publicly. The businesses did not have a city-issued vehicle for hire business license. One of the services did not show up at the agreed upon time.

The second service, MK2 Limousine Service, picked up the investigator on South Meridian and drove him to the Cox Center. At that point, investigators from the Permits and ID Unit of the Oklahoma City Police Department and a representative from the Transportation Division of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission spoke to the driver of the limo, 42-year-old Robert Clark.

The owner of the service, 50-year-old Michael Billings, also responded to the scene after police contacted him.

Captain Jeffrey Becker with the Oklahoma City Police Department says Clark and Billings were given six citations each, including failing to have the vehicle for hire business license and failure to have adequate insurance. Becker also says each citation is $750.

The Corporation Commission representative also issued a citation against Clark, the driver, for operating a motor vehicle without valid license/ certificate. Both men were transported to the Municipal Courts where they posted bond. Becker says they knew these two companies were operating illegally.

"If you look in the phone book you'll see that a lot more business are advertising than are licensed," says Becker.

Oklahoma City Police will continue to address the on-going problem of limousine services operating illegally in Oklahoma City. As of Wednesday, 15 limousine/van services are properly licensed with a city-issued vehicle for hire business license. If a limo service in Oklahoma City picks up a fare here, they are required to obtain this license and be inspected by the Permits and ID Unit.

Several more limousine companies are operating illegally. Police say they obtain business through advertising in the Yellow Pages and on various Internet websites. They often use multiple business names tied to the same service and phone number.

Limousine services that are unlicensed and uninspected represent a legitimate safety concern for their passengers. Corporation Commission rules require each vehicle for hire service to carry set amounts of insurance depending on how many passengers a given vehicle can accommodate. Some of these vehicles carry anywhere from eight to 20 passengers at a time. The unlicensed carriers are often also skirting this insurance requirement. This allows them to undercut the legitimate businesses who follow the law by charging lower fares.
